New Season

Well here we are again 5 weeks away from the cruise ship season. So we have been digging in cupboards and drawers to find findings and molds we have been buying for the last 10 years and saving for when we had time. We made a conscious decision this year to purchase as little as possible and use up what we have on hand. The start of the year works out well no promises for later however.

Have done several new dichroic pieces.A smaller pendant that we will put on a leather cord.

Hopefully they will be good sellers

Had made some dichroic hair clips several years ago and they were popular products. Found a few more findings so will have them on the table as well.

Had lots of beads and memory wire for bracelets and as well found some magnetic hematite

so bracelets it is:

There are more colours but all in the same style. Memory wire now used up but still a few hematite strings left.

Have lots of pieces of sea glass picked over a life time of wandering beaches so am playing with a few ideas. Neither one I am really happy with at the moment. Thought of putting some pieces in a wire cage.

Its kind of okay but doesn’t show up like I hoped it would.

The other I really like the concept but can’t find the right finding. I want our visitors to take home a little bit of Cape Breton with them. So what better than sea glass and sand from Dominion Beach.

Really want an oval hollow glass dome but the domes I can find are solid and made to show or magnify pictures. Will keep looking.

Dichroic Glass Sculptures

Well I finally took some time to get some pictures. First the fleur de lis for Fortress Louisbourg. Even did some special carding.

Here are the dichroic pendants, magnets and coasters and hot pads.

Then I did a new grouping of tacked dichroic pendants for the ships and while I was at it did some framed pieces  that I call dichroic sculptures. Unfortunately these pictures don’t do them justice but will try to get better ones before putting them on the web.

I am really pleased with these pieces especially the one in the pewter frame. The wooden frames can stand, be hung or lay flat. the pewter frame is for hanging only and is bigger than the others as well as the glass pieces is larger.

I Really Was Working

Well I am officially on our 4 week break. That doesn’t mean I don’t have to work, just means I don’t have to pack up once a week for a day at the ships.

I need to make wind chimes for Wendy. And have completed some things for the Center. Some panels

This one will be a series of many which will become the Our Town Series. I used to do these pieces with each house 3 or 4 colours but discovered as I ran out of some colours that I actually like them much better this way and will continue doing them like this. Still the same funky shapes.

This one Lorraine says looks like earth when you see it on the internet. I see it as many paths in life some connected, some dead end.

This one absolutely steals my attention. When looking at this one I ask myself “What’s Out There?”

The above are fused pieces and great for home decor

Then I did some glass casting. I cast some glass jewellery as well as the sea shells and another face.

I like the striking contrast between the red and black.

The shells you have seen before as well as the glass cast boxes. And although the face is similar here is the new face.

And to throw a little fun in here are some future items as soon as I figure out what to do with them. They could be pins?, they could be the start of small wind chimes?. So if you have any ideas please add some comments, would love to hear your suggestions. They are 3inhx1.75in w.

And last but not least several pins, same mold done at different temperatures. Which is your favourite – detail or not?

And almost for got small faces.

So you see although I wasn’t writing I was working

Well here are 2 cast glass African masks. I am going to have to figure out how to display these so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I would like to do a series of different colours, both translucent and opaque colours.

While I was doing these I also put 4 pieces of Mystic Fusion jewellry in the kiln. Bob MacDougall and I do these jointly and are very pleased with our results. The wolves this time didn’t come out as well as hoped but that is okay. Anyway here are some pictures. These really need to be seen to be appreciated, pictures don’t do them justice.

New Piece

Took this out of the kiln this morning. I really like it,it is small probably about 5 in. high and 3 in. wide. This happens to be one of my favourite colours and I needed the practice piece.

Front of mask

Front of mask

Needs some work on the sides and will have to figure out why it had sharp picked edges, however that will happen

Back of Mask

Back of Mask

I like the back as much as the front. I will get better pictures later and replace these.

I am going to have to figure out some kind of stand for these pieces because I am going to do them in a series of different colours.

New Week Starting Tomorrow

Because the weather is so miserable I decided to move some glass into the house to do some cutting. I think it was all of my third cuts when I managed to give myself what I will call a deep scratch. And You know I really am lucky, I could call a friend and Dr. Shari came to the rescue and did the bandaging.

So that’s it 3 things went wrong and everyone says things happen in threes. So this is the third. Tomorrow I decided to start a new week and only good things from there.

I so decree.

Good News

Good news is I have running water today, I think I can hear it running all the way into Sydney Harbour. The better news is I have no holes in my walls as we thought might need to happen. Whatever he put in finally worked sometime during the night.  I guess the old adage of a “watched pot never boils” is the same for plugged drains, I must have checked it every 10 minutes last night until I finally called it a night. Nothing was happening but this morning the water was gone.

A guy that I had helped out awhile ago stopped in  yesterday with an open rattling box. He is a collector and had bid on and won 2 pieces of early 20th century carnival glass. The rattling was the 2 pieces broken into so many pieces nothing could be done to save them. I now have some carnival glass to play with. It will be interesting because it does not have the same COE  as anything else I work with so whatever I do can only be done with those pieces.

When I have time that will happen

Frustrating 2 Weeks

maxine12All kinds of things going on, most of it not what I wanted to happen. The accountant  got back to me with what I owe the Fed’s. Major deep funk for a day or so then I remember how lucky I am to have a home and a business etc that they can tax. Lot’s of people out there struggling these days. Then everything I put into the kiln were complete failures this past week, couldn’t figure out why. Then I found it a broken brick and the heat escaping. So should have the materials tomorrow to fix it and I am sure I will then remember how lucky I am. And then just to add insult to injury the plumber has been here for the past 3 hours trying to unclog the kitchen sinks, without success  may add.  He is now gone to get some heavy duty drain cleaner to put in it. That’s probably another hour to my bill, but I’m lucky right???????????

I think I’ll just go to the liquor store, if I am going to have a headache it might as well be for a good reason

New Theme

Wonder if anyone noticed that I changed the theme of the blog over the past weekend? I know spring is suppose to be here and have actually seen a few brave crocus poke their heads above ground. I know the sun is actually shining on occassion but damn it is cold and windy outside.

Makes my life alittle difficult since I work in a building with no heat and am having a tough time convincing myself to go out there. My mind is swimming with a thousand iseas of what I want to do but the body is weak. However days are not totally wasted, house looks good, everything gathered and in the hands of the accountant. May not even be as bad as we first thought so who knows the week may end on a positive note after all.

Have been playing with some smaller face casting, am going to do some glass weaving before the end of next week. Have been putting that off for several years, never enough time in my days it seems, but now time to make some.  Have to stop putting other things first and seriously get some things I want to play with done.

2009 Trail Map Almost Ready

Spent some time yesterday and today setting up our ad for the Artisan’s trail map put out by the Cape Breton Center for Craft and Design. Since it is published for 2 years I needed to make sure it covers the places where our work is sold then needed to make sure the website contains the correct information. That is now done, to bad it takes something like this to make me sit down and do these things.
I thought when I retired I would be sitting around most of the day twiddling my thumbs. I don’t know where the time goes, although I have to admit I spend a lot of time, at this time of the year, watching curling. I know you sports enthusiasts are yawning (have you ever tried it, it ain’t easy ya know). Anyway the Canadian men are kind of running away with it so it is a bit boring but we are getting ready for the Olympics next year in Vancouver, BC.

New glass pictures will be coming soon.
