Seattle Visit

So I spent the last couple of days in Seattle with friends. What can I say it was awesome, nothing replaces long time friends. It rained and I don’t mean showers IT RAINED but we didn’t care we bussed, walked and climbed hills and got wet. In the process we explored Pike Market. Everywhere I turned there were glass folks – what a treat.

I didn’t take glass pictures at the market saved that for later. However the fish stalls amazed me. Unfortunately no fish throwing going on at the time. I particularly liked this picture because for some reason there was that 1 red fish laying there.

And then there was Tacoma and the Museum of Glass , but first the Chichuly Bridge. Picture Friday as totally overcast, heavy rain and try to imagine what these colours would be like with full sunshine. This picture is a part of the roof of the bridge.

This is a part of one of the side panels, it was higher than what this shows I just couldn’t get it all in and I was getting wetter and wetter and stiffer and stiffer. And of course what you see behind it is the over cast sky. Again imagine sunlight.

And here are 2 pillars that either start or end the bridge depending on your direction. Lots of other glass outside but again to wet and I didn’t get pictures. these pieces of glass are a totally different shade of blue on a sunny day.

And then there was inside. The Kids section was something else, a child’s image and an artists handiwork. The kids drew the pictures and the pieces I believe were created in the hot shop. Lots of monsters, big teeth, bright colours, good guys and bad guys and one of the battles even continues in heaven because their grandfathers are still fighting there. Ah the innocence of children. Anyway couldn’t take pictures in there.

And then came the exhibition – Glimmering Gone. I don’t even know how to tell you my experience with this one. Trish and I just sat there stared for awhile. It is breathtaking.

This is from the side so shows you the complex layering, the pieces are hung by fishing line or something like that, layer after layer.

 Than from the front.

I think these pictures say it all.

Last night I arrived in Sequim and new adventures are getting planned today, which does include Richard LaLonde’s Studio, LaConner and the glass exhibit and of course Vancouver Island and only time will tell what interesting spots in between before I head back to Seattle for Easter.

Will be posting before that however.

Dichroic Glass Sculptures

Well I finally took some time to get some pictures. First the fleur de lis for Fortress Louisbourg. Even did some special carding.

Here are the dichroic pendants, magnets and coasters and hot pads.

Then I did a new grouping of tacked dichroic pendants for the ships and while I was at it did some framed pieces  that I call dichroic sculptures. Unfortunately these pictures don’t do them justice but will try to get better ones before putting them on the web.

I am really pleased with these pieces especially the one in the pewter frame. The wooden frames can stand, be hung or lay flat. the pewter frame is for hanging only and is bigger than the others as well as the glass pieces is larger.

I Really Was Working

Well I am officially on our 4 week break. That doesn’t mean I don’t have to work, just means I don’t have to pack up once a week for a day at the ships.

I need to make wind chimes for Wendy. And have completed some things for the Center. Some panels

This one will be a series of many which will become the Our Town Series. I used to do these pieces with each house 3 or 4 colours but discovered as I ran out of some colours that I actually like them much better this way and will continue doing them like this. Still the same funky shapes.

024

This one Lorraine says looks like earth when you see it on the internet. I see it as many paths in life some connected, some dead end.

026

This one absolutely steals my attention. When looking at this one I ask myself “What’s Out There?”

029

The above are fused pieces and great for home decor

Then I did some glass casting. I cast some glass jewellery as well as the sea shells and another face.

I like the striking contrast between the red and black.

The shells you have seen before as well as the glass cast boxes. And although the face is similar here is the new face.

And to throw a little fun in here are some future items as soon as I figure out what to do with them. They could be pins?, they could be the start of small wind chimes?. So if you have any ideas please add some comments, would love to hear your suggestions. They are 3inhx1.75in w.

012

And last but not least several pins, same mold done at different temperatures. Which is your favourite – detail or not?

018

And almost for got small faces.

So you see although I wasn’t writing I was working

First Cruise Ship of the Season

Tonight when I went into the marine terminal to set up for the ship tomorrow I wasn’t as excited as I usually am. Could be the change of leadership. Last season the A.R.T. Foundation gave it up and the port authority decided to take it on themselves. Time will tell, hopefully tomorrow will be a great selling day and everything will settle into place.

Have decided to almost(can’t give it up totally because it sells)give up jewellery and took things like key chains, coaster sets and recycled cast glass sea creatures. Will see the reaction tomorrow.

We will also see for the first time the reaction to our enamel paintings. I am sure most won’t understand without the full explanation.  Will have to get something written up to explain them.

Wish me luck

Sky Blue Cast Glass African Mask

Sky Blue Cast Glass African Mask

Well here are 2 cast glass African masks. I am going to have to figure out how to display these so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I would like to do a series of different colours, both translucent and opaque colours.

While I was doing these I also put 4 pieces of Mystic Fusion jewellry in the kiln. Bob MacDougall and I do these jointly and are very pleased with our results. The wolves this time didn’t come out as well as hoped but that is okay. Anyway here are some pictures. These really need to be seen to be appreciated, pictures don’t do them justice.

New Piece

Took this out of the kiln this morning. I really like it,it is small probably about 5 in. high and 3 in. wide. This happens to be one of my favourite colours and I needed the practice piece.

Front of mask

Front of mask

Needs some work on the sides and will have to figure out why it had sharp picked edges, however that will happen

Back of Mask

Back of Mask

I like the back as much as the front. I will get better pictures later and replace these.

I am going to have to figure out some kind of stand for these pieces because I am going to do them in a series of different colours.

New Week Starting Tomorrow

Because the weather is so miserable I decided to move some glass into the house to do some cutting. I think it was all of my third cuts when I managed to give myself what I will call a deep scratch. And You know I really am lucky, I could call a friend and Dr. Shari came to the rescue and did the bandaging.

So that’s it 3 things went wrong and everyone says things happen in threes. So this is the third. Tomorrow I decided to start a new week and only good things from there.

I so decree.

Good News

Good news is I have running water today, I think I can hear it running all the way into Sydney Harbour. The better news is I have no holes in my walls as we thought might need to happen. Whatever he put in finally worked sometime during the night.  I guess the old adage of a “watched pot never boils” is the same for plugged drains, I must have checked it every 10 minutes last night until I finally called it a night. Nothing was happening but this morning the water was gone.

A guy that I had helped out awhile ago stopped in  yesterday with an open rattling box. He is a collector and had bid on and won 2 pieces of early 20th century carnival glass. The rattling was the 2 pieces broken into so many pieces nothing could be done to save them. I now have some carnival glass to play with. It will be interesting because it does not have the same COE  as anything else I work with so whatever I do can only be done with those pieces.

When I have time that will happen

Frustrating 2 Weeks

maxine12All kinds of things going on, most of it not what I wanted to happen. The accountant  got back to me with what I owe the Fed’s. Major deep funk for a day or so then I remember how lucky I am to have a home and a business etc that they can tax. Lot’s of people out there struggling these days. Then everything I put into the kiln were complete failures this past week, couldn’t figure out why. Then I found it a broken brick and the heat escaping. So should have the materials tomorrow to fix it and I am sure I will then remember how lucky I am. And then just to add insult to injury the plumber has been here for the past 3 hours trying to unclog the kitchen sinks, without success  may add.  He is now gone to get some heavy duty drain cleaner to put in it. That’s probably another hour to my bill, but I’m lucky right???????????

I think I’ll just go to the liquor store, if I am going to have a headache it might as well be for a good reason
